Cargo cults

The Talocan wreck was found in the vicinity of a sleeper listening post, and it appears at first sight to be stripped of any salvage, probably by the Sleepers. Our crews are still making certain that no nanite or other ancient traps are present.

Meanwhile the exterior is also worth examining. The hull is an elongated ellipsoid, with a thicker band running around its circumference in the middle, and a band running along the long side's top edge. The front part has six forward facing spikey protrusions, probably scanning devices or some sort of weapon. The aft has exhausts from a propulsion module.

This type of shape is quite typical of Talocan structures, be it ships or even small outposts (these tend to be somewhat less prolate). It could be just the product of my imagination, but I do see a certain resemblance with the stalagmite asteroids, albeit turned on their side.

This points to a very interesting hypothesis: the Takmahl (do not mix them with the Talocan) worship of the stalagmite asteroid is a cargo cult religion!

The Takmahl might have been visited by the Talocan, and were so impressed by their gifts and help coming from that alien ship, that they made or modeled an asteroid to look like it, and to implore from that rock the gifts that they received from an actual alien visitor.

This is a known phenomenon: indigenous inhabitants of small islands, during the wars of reclamation, met with the technologically superior Amarr who used islands as temporary bases and brought in goods with airplanes. After the reclamation, the bases were removed and the army left, but the inhabitants made mock landing strips from sticks and stones in the hope that this would attract the divine visitors with their goods.

But the Takmahl empire is fairly young on the scale of things! If true, this hypothesis implies that (perhaps the last) Talocan would have wandered around the cluster much much after we now estimate that their civilization got extinct!

Talocan rocks and labyrinths

The Jove are thought to have found the ancient Talocan wormhole control network and gained access to the wormhole cluster Anoikis via it. The Jovian wormhole settlers are believed to be the forefathers of the Sleeper civilization. And many experts (including authorities in the field such as Uriel Anteovnuecci) theorize that the Drifters are, in turn, offshoots from the Sleepers. This is a reasonable assumption, given that they live in Anoikis. In addition, technology such as the thermo-electric convertors that the Drifters use to power their structures clearly bear the hallmark of the Sleepers.

The start of the chain of knowledge transfer for advanced spacetime engineering seems to be the Talocan, and this begs the question of whether the Drifter's Nexus superstructure is also based on Talocan spacetime engineering. And since the Nexus appears to influence spacetime also in our own cluster (via the appearance of phased fields), I would conjecture that it could influence other structures in our cluster as well, namely structures built with the very same Talocan spacetime technology.

The main "suspect" for me is the Takmahl labyrinth. There is a link from the Talocan not only to the Drifters but in parallel also to the Takmahl. The Drifters chose wormholes which have certain rock formations that are of particular ritual importance to the Talocan. Those are very much different from the asteroids found in belts in common Anoikis systems. Also the Takmahl incorporated most unusual rock formations in their cult.

The Talocan must have liked labyrinths too, and both Drifter and Takmahl cultures indebted to them have inherited this peculiar penchant for mazes. Although they are very different in nature, spacetime engineered labyrinths have been found in both Drifter and Takmahl home systems.

This makes me wonder whether the current changes in our spacetime allegedly due to Nexus tinkering may have induced changes in the Takmahl labyrinth too. I am planning to revisit it, but will need to enlist the help of SFRIM pilots to keep the Blood Raiders that infest that labyrinth at bay...

A brief history of wormhole space

The Talocan era

The Anoikis star cluster is situated at a distance of roughly 1500 light years from Amarr, far beyond the reach of modern jump drives. It is believed to have been first colonized over 6000 years ago by an ancient and advanced race, the Talocan. They were masters in manipulating spacetime, far outstripping even the Jove in that particular science. We now believe that the Talocan could alter the very fabric of spacetime to allow easy travel via artificially generated wormholes.

There was a control hub for these artificial wormholes, hidden in our very own cluster, in the system W477-P. This hub would have consisted of a vast orbital lattice surrounding the W477-P star. One of the functions of this stellar swarm was to generate and stabilize wormhole passages at will. There have been rumors of similar hub in Anoikis, but to this date it has not been found.

The Talocan used this technology to maintain a network of interstellar routes in Anoikis, in our cluster (bypassing jump gates), and between them. Some believe that the Talocan even manipulated the locations of the stars in Anoikis or the strength of their gravitational field, but that is generally considered far-fetched.

The Talocan vanished, both from our cluster and from Anoikis. We do not know what happened to them, nor exactly when they vanished. They left behind only a handful of derelict structures, among which the wormhole control hub around W477-P, which has kept functioning until fairly recently.

The Sleeper era

A certain faction of the Jove, the Sleepers, discovered this wormhole travel hub, sometime near the end of the Second Jove Empire, roughly 1000 years ago. The Jove of this faction are called Sleepers because their bodies reside in permanent hibernation, and they live their lives as disembodied infomorphs in virtual space. They did not inform the other Jove about the Talocan highway to Anoikis. The Sleepers relocated, in secret, to Anoikis to escape the internecine Jove wars that ended the second Jove Empire.

It is only fairly recently, three hundred years ago, during the Third Jove Empire, that their brethren found out where they had gone to. By then, Sleepers had thoroughly colonized Anoikis and had become its new inhabitants, heirs to the Talocan. You will encounter Sleeper structures in wormhole space, and their drones are still active there. They will attack you, for example while you mine. They will become more ferocious going from class 1 to class 6 holes.

The Seyllin cataclysm

All this time, the passage to Anoikis remained a well-kept secret - parhaps only known to the Society of Conscious Thought or the Sisters of Eve. This changed abruptly on March 10, YC 111, when a cataclysmic event occurred that revealed Anoikis to all.

That day, the type-O giant blue star at the center of the Seyllin system in the Federation erupted with a ferocity never seen before. The eruption resulted in an highly energetic and strongly-focused plasma flare that not only destroyed the Gallente colony on Seyllin I, but also reached a hidden entryway to the Talocan wormhole network.

The flare's energy was injected in the hidden Talocan network, leading to an overload of the network and a concomitant overload of the Talocan stellar engine at W477-P. The wormhole control hub was critically damaged. As a result, the wormhole connections were no longer kept in check and became uncontrollable. Suddenly, hundreds of unstable wormholes opened up all over New Eden, offering temporary pathways into Anoikis that could be traversed by our ships.

A mere six years after the Seyllin cataclysm, W477-P went supernova, and the Talocan control infrastructure stabilizing the wormhole network was lost. The remnants of the supernova can still be seen in the sky, and are known as Caroline's star. As a result, for the foreseeable future, wormholes will continue to appear randomly throughout our cluster, and they cannot be stabilized any more.

The Capsuleer era

Wormhole connections to Anoikis are short-lived and randomly connect stars. This inherent instability is why the Empire's rule of law cannot be enforced in Anoikis, and no territory can be claimed. At first, Concord tried to ban all travel to Anoikis, but this travel ban was soon defied. The first (non-Jove) person to enter Anoikis was a Jin-Mei astrophysicist from CryoDron, Lianda Burreau. She is believed to have died at the hands of the Sleepers.

Of course, capsuleers and their organisations -attracted by the lawlessness of the place- could not be stopped either. They are now the de-facto (third-wave) colonists of Anoikis, battling over its resources with the remnants of the previous inhabitants, the Sleepers.

Geography of Anoikis

Introductory note: As I was taking visitors and new personnel for the Chapel with me to Seclusion during my visit last week, I prepared a primer for them about Anoikis. This was also useful for me! When I was young, nobody knew of the existence of Anoikis, and it was a surprise to me when I first came back from the asteroid monastery to worldly matters. So, I decided to put this primer in my own log for later reference.

Today, I will start with the first part, geography, and tomorrow I will compile the next part, history.

Geography

Anoikis is a star cluster situated about 1500 light years from Amarr, in what would be called the south-western direction along our cluster's plane. Just like our cluster, it is a circular, disk-shaped cluster. It contains about 2600 stars, so half that of our own cluster of known worlds, grouped in sub-clusters. The stars have been named according to their stellar catalog number, starting with a "J" and then a number. That is why Anoikis is sometimes also refered to as "J-space".

The stars are categorized in classes, ranging from class 1 ("C1") to class 6 ("C6"). The higher numbers are more dangerous as their original denizens (discussed below) are more entrenched. Many stars are unusual: among them are plenty magnetars, black holes, red giants, pulsars, and so on.

The stars are grouped in constellations and regions, but there are no jump gates, nor fixed routes connecting them. The regions' designation start with a letter ranging from A (containing the C1 stars) up to F (containing the C6 stars).

The map above shows the shape of the Anoikis cluster. Coordinates are in light years, putting Amarr at the origin. So, the center of Anoikis is about 1000 light years south and 825 light years east of Amarr.  The two coordinate lines in the graph point out Seclusion's location.

The colors refer to the class: C1 purple, C2 blue, C3 green : these systems always  have wormholes that connect to our own cluster. They are the entrance gate, and probably were the first to be colonized. From there it goes outward to C4 yellow, C5 orange, and the last subcluster C6 red.

Talocan and shipcasters

There is not all that much known with certainty about the Talocan.

The Talocan were (or are?) a truly ancient race, perhaps even older than the Jove. They mastered the weaving of spacetime, and could create pocket universes and project wormholes to new places. They could create wormhole channels between stars of their choosing, building networks with travel hubs. They were not limited in their travels to our cluster, which some researchers say made them more advanced even than the Jove.

They could travel through Anoikis with wormhole connections of their choosing - indeed many scholars believe that the randomly rewiring network of wormhole connections seen today is a malfunction in whatever is left of the Talocan network control.

Today we do not see them around, but it does not mean they no longer exist. We do not find evidence of a collapse of their civilization as we do for the Takmahl empire. They may just have left the cluster, as they certainly had the ability to do so.

Indeed, most scholars agree that the Talocan harnessed the power of stars (in particular blue ones containing special isogen forms) in order to alter the very topology of spacetime.

Sounds familiar, in the light of current news? To me it does: that's exactly what we try to recreate with the "shipcaster" technology. It requires a stellar transmuter to power the casters that create new paths to faraway systems...

Are we, and the Triglavians as well, following in the footsteps of the Takmahl by exploiting the breadcrumbs left around by the Talocan as they left? Some speculate that the Triglavians are an offshoot of the Talocan - but I find it more likely that they are the inheritors of the Talocan technology.

Shape of the labyrinth

Linear algebra is a most beautiful thing. Some mathematical number crunching turned my list of measured distances in a nice list of coordinates (in km):

Now, it is important to keep in mind that the list of distances is invariant to any translation or rotation of these coordinates. In other words, you can shift the origin of the coordinates to any point you want, for example center it on the gate. You can also rotate everything however you want, for example to have the line between the gate and "site 0" correspond to north direction on the map. So, the numbers themselves matter less than the relation between them. This spatial relation is shown by visualizing the sites in a three-dimensional plot (again, coordinates in km):

Note that the labels have been given by capsuleers exploring the place, without knowledge of the spatial layout of the labyrinth. The rooms of the labyrinth are almost laid out on a plane. But a two-dimensional map can not get the distances right, the 3D map does (to within 20 km, i.e. an error not visible on the scale of the plot), proving that the sites are not exactly on a plane. The holy rock and the entrance gate are "highest". There's an upper level, with sites 3,4,8,9 and a lower level with the other sites.

What is already clear about the connections between the sites, is:

  • the sites are not always connected to the closest nearby sites. Although site 0 is indeed connected via ancient warp portals to 6,4,1,2, for example site 5 is connected to 1,4,7,8.
  • the orientation of the warp gates on the octagon of gates is not related to the orientation of the connections in real space (this could also be seen from the direction your ship warps to).

These data hold more mysteries, I am certain of it. There is no obvious glaring hole in the labyrinth that would hint of a hidden room, but perhaps I need to play more with the visualisations, and turn this thing around in my head.

Distance matrix

I am tired but grateful. I completed the matrix, and even added some columns. They are, from left to right (and up to down) "entrance to the labyrinth", then rooms 0,1,2,3,4,6,5,7,8,9 (yes, 6 and 5 are swapped because that is how they are most easily traversed), and finally the "holy rock". Twelve rows and twelve columns giving the distances (in km).

The error bar on these are about 50 km - probably due to the fact that the drone was not always put right in the middle of the octagon of warp gates.

I will start the analysis tomorrow - for today I am too tired and stressed out from running away from blood raider battleships.

PS: the distance matrix is shown below as a heat map:

Flares

I returned to the labyrinth, for a more in-depth study.

First, I tried to see if the key could be bypassed. I dropped a drone in the first room of the labyrinth, the one you access after entering the labyrinth via the warp accelerator at its entrance.

The drone was visible and warpable after being probed down by combat scanners. So, I did scan it down, and tried to warp to it. Rather than landing on the grid of the first labyrinth room, I landed on the warp accelerator at the entrance of the labyrinth - regardless of having the key or not having it in my cargo hold. I could not warp to the dropped drone, over 73 thousand km away.

After the drone study, in the first room, I remarked something I had not noticed before. Flares!

On the image above you see the Aphi sun below, the octagonal warp gate complex in the middle, and above: flares. These give bursts of energy, about every ten seconds. Something appears to explode at the base, and a vertical pillar of fire erupts from them, and after the eruption the flare dies down and goes quiet for a couple of seconds, only to repeat the cycle after that. They are not solar flares, as they're clearly disconnected from the sun.

There are more flares than there are labyrinth rooms; I count seventeen of them. They seem to be located on a plane, and they are static - they flare up periodically but always in the same place. Perhaps some of them coincide with the location of other labyrinth rooms? Perhaps they indicate hidden rooms in the labyrinth? I do not know. I will explore.

A holy rock

At the center of the Talocan labyrinth lies... a rock. A large, somewhat elongated and spiky asteroid made of minerals that are worthless to mine.

What is the significance the Talocan attached to this strangely shaped asteroid in close orbit to the sun of Aphi? Is the rock created by a natural process or was it sculpted? Why did the Talocan build this elaborate labyrinth around it? There are no clues I could find from the rock itself, it is absolutely barren. Scans reveal no structures in or on the rock - although I do not dismiss the possibility that the Talocan knew how to fool scanners. There are these strange spikes, rising like a demonic crown at each end. There also seem to be some crevices and caves, as can be seen from this zoomed in image of the rock's surface:

We have no idea what the rock meant to the Talocan, but what we do know is that it became a holy place for the Takmahl. Over the centuries, a vast space industry grew around the rock, centered around a massive space temple where the sacrificial blood flowed day and night. Around it arose a sprawling complex, with libraries, prisons for the sacrifice victims, smaller subsidiary temples and chapels, places for pilgrims to rest and dine, and souvenir shops.

After the fall of the Takmahl empire thousand years ago, the Takmahl religious space hub around the rock started its inexorable decay. The only thing that now remains of it are twisted fragments of the temple, space ruins and rubble, drifting around the rock, locked by its weak gravity. Among this rubble, you will find library logs from the library chapels and transcript logs from the pilgrims. Pieces of the temple still contain various artefacts and ritual texts. And plastic replicas of the rock inside a snow globe from the souvenir shops can also still be found. Finally, of course, there are profitable remnants of Talocan technology that we still use in applications such as specialized armor plating.

The ruins and the rubble accrete in a disk around the rock's equator. They are floating in a cloud of dust and also organic particles that turn out to be vaporized frozen blood flakes. Below is a closer look at a part of the debris ring:

I've been able to retrieve a large amount of artefacts and remnants of logs, and they will keep me busy for quite a time to come. Also, thanks the help of the Lumeneers, I now have a key to return to this place at leisure (although I'll need to be careful at the rock, as there are blood raiders who still come here hoping to find something holy to them).

The Labyrinth

Using the key from the curator, we were able to access the labyrinth near the star in Aphi. Each site is shaped as an octagon, with spacetime anomalies at each point:

The Talocan were master weavers of spacetime. The anomalies act as acceleration gates that warp vessels to other points near the sun in Aphi. However, they do not look like any acceleration gates that I have seen before. Rather, they resemble small wormhole portals. The effects of gravitational lensing can be seen at their outskirts, and a bright central energy nucleus lies at their center. Below is an image that shows a portal in closer view, along with the Stratios for scale.

There are no structures to keep these wormholes stable, like the structures you will find at jump gates or the usual acceleration gates. The portals seem perfectly stable by themselves, although only four out of eight will be traversable. I do not know whether that is because they did actually destabilize over the milennia, or whether they never were meant to work. Perhaps the octagon had a special meaning for the Talocan - as it does for the Takmahl - and the closed portals serve only to complete the octagon.

I find this an absolutely wondrous place, and I can only imagine how much more wondrous it must have seemed to the first Takmahl that discovered this site. It was clearly beyond their own technology - I think it is even beyond ours still. Perhaps the Takmahl realized this was a remnant from an ancient alien civilization, that we now know to be the Talocan. Perhaps they saw it as a sign of their Blood God, left for them near this blood red star. Perhaps they saw opportunity to learn new technology. Whatever it was, they stopped their decade long odyssey in the desert of space to settle here, in Aphi and the surrounding systems, even though the constellation is poor in temperate planets.

Who knows what other Talocan ruins and artefacts they found? From all the Sani Sabik who fled Amarr after Queron's purges the Takmahl were the only ones to successfully create a thousand year interstellar empire. Some speculate the Talocan technology is the reason for that - although I prefer to believe the power of the stolen Avetat helped them.

We did not encounter any resistance in the labyrinth. It consists of ten sites, interconnected through the portals. For completeness, and reference, I add the map of the labyrinth to his log entry:

((ooc source attribution: This map comes from Eve University,

https://wiki.eveuniversity.org/Labyrinth ))

There are still remaining questions I want to investigate about the labyrinth in the future, such as the spatial geometry of the labyrinth. Are the sites forming a pattern? Does that pattern reveal hidden chambers in space? Now that I am in possession of a key to the labyrinth, I will be able to visit it again at leisure.

The labyrinth leads to a central stage, where the mystery of this Talocan construction deepens...

A breakthrough

A breakthrough! The images of the Talocan Ten - sculptures and stone carvings in Jakri - have found a match in our library's database. They appeared in the work of Reinhart Novan, explorer and member of the Societas.

Novan investigated the Takmahl and their connection with the Ametat and Avetat, before disappearing about seven years ago for deepspace explorations from which he has not returned (yet). Not only has he left a log of his explorations, but also extensive records and documentation material. I remember having studied those before, and this is probably why I subconsciously recognized the imagery.

In Novan's documentation the Talocan Ten are shown in a different place: apparently the Jakri chapel was not the only place devoted to them. I am eager to read up, and I am forwarding the information I already found to Munan, but for now I must go and enact Saint Nick the Destroyer for the kids...

The Talocan-Takmahl link

We were able to access the chamber where the artifacts were found. It is a Takmahl chapel - although that word may be misleading. A space like this had many functions, only part of which are related to religion. It is a place to reflect in silence, a place where some rituals take place. In their case, blood sacrifices. It also is a place where a certain knowledge or information is stored. Ledgers, administration, scientific information. Rather than keeping it in a central location, the Takmahl often tended to keep it decentralized and sorted by subject, and put in a chapel dedicated to that subject.

The room has statues and depictions of men and gods, but the peculiar thing is that most of the stone carved figures depict the Talocan. Or at least, how the Takmahl thought the Talocan looked like: people wearing a space suit and helmet in the shape of a snake or monster.

The Talocan are a civilization that existed long before the Takmahl. When the early Takmahl (descendants of Sani Sabik fleeing from Amarr) settled in the Araz constellation, they found abandoned Talocan technology and this gave them the tools for survival, and a boost to change their colony into an empire of its own. So, later, the Takmahl included the Talocan in their mythologies. They considered the advanced technology to be a gift  from their blood god, left behind by the snake-helmeted servants of the blood god.

The chamber was clearly dedicated to the Talocan, and to preserve some knowledge about them. How do the cogwheels fit in? I have to cross reference the depictions, carvings and statuettes in this chamber with the information on the Talocan we have at the Society's library.

Project Infernal Spade

Here's an interesting passage in the files of Project Infernal Spade:

The appearance of Talocan ruins in w-space has put a renewed focus on this civilization. Very little was known about the Talocan before their ruins appeared in w-space besides that they once had a presence in the Okkelen constellation, an area now claimed by the Caldari State. Despite being overrun by rogue drones, the Devil's Dig Site deadspace complex in the Otitoh system held archaeologists' interest for some time, mostly due to its housing some of the only Talocan relic remnants still available.

As I mentioned before, Talocan ruins are also present in Aphi, in the Araz constellation, in the heartlands of the Takmahl empire. Their empire prospered many centuries in part because of the Talocan technology.

The Talocan were using wormhole space to travel through the cluster and maybe beyond, but it is not clear whether the Takmahl deciphered or mastered that part of their technology. If they did, then they may have spread and created colonies in Anoikis, much as we do today.

Antiquus

I am visiting the Arek'Jalaan archives at the "Site One: Antiquus" facility in Eram. There are few (or no) capsuleers around, so there is no influx of new research from field work. The field work that has been done during dr. Tukoss' time is very well preserved and archived, and a lot of academic work on the materials collected from that time is still being done. There is probably enough material to analyse for scientists for decades to come.

The Antiquus research complex is impressive to behold. There are nice quarters for visiting scholars, close to the main spire but set apart from the main stations that are not accessible for visitors. Although there weren't any capsuleers visiting, there are many baseliner ships in and around the complex - it is bustling with activity.

The archives are accessed via the different storage platforms, one for each research division of Arek'Jalaan. Book copies of abstracts are automatically uploaded to the cargohold upon approaching the platform.

Two projects in particular draw my attention. Project Infernal Spade, formerly led by a capsuleer named Myyona, investigates the Talocan. This ancient race is linked to the Takmahl - many believe that the meteoric rise of the Takmahl is due to the fact that they stumbled on Talocan artefacts and gate technology, and were able to reverse-engineer them to some extent.

Even more to the point is Project Theseus. It specifically investigates the Takmahl and their relics. Its lead researcher is a familiar person to all those interested in the Takmahl: prof. Valerie Valate. I talked to this Sani Sabik before, as she is maybe the cluster's leading expert on the Takmahl. Here I can dig deeper into these archives, and I am excited to compare my own limited findings to that of other field researchers.
